What are custom orthotics?
Custom orthotics are considered “prescription” shoe/foot inserts. They are custom-made to fit into YOUR shoes and support YOUR individual arch. Quite often, the left arch and right arch of your foot are different, so a custom molded orthotic fits your specific foot structure. Just as every person has a unique fingerprint, each person has a unique foot structure. Custom orthotics help change how your feet move and function on a daily basis. The good news is that they don’t only help your feet, but help multiple parts of your body align, and can decrease pain in your spine, hips, knees, and lower back as well.

Why can I not just buy prefabricated ones at the store? They are much cheaper there.
Many people often tell Dr. Selbst that they purchased over-the-counter orthotics for much cheaper, when in fact they really just purchased extra padding for their shoe. These types of inserts just add cushioning and padding to help treat the symptoms, rather than the underlying problem. They are often much less durable, flexible, and not nearly as sturdy as you need them to be. The biggest factor in over-the-counter orthotics is that they are not custom-made to YOUR feet and needs, even though the machine you step on at the store may say so!
